ON
MY APPROACH TO MAKING NONFIGURATIVE
STATIC AND KINETIC SCULPTURE
Ilhan Koman & Françoise Ribeyrolles,
Leonardo, Pergamon Press, New York (USA), 1979, Vol.12
Abstract
Ilhan Koman describes examples of the works he has made since 1965. His
active interest in varied mechanical and geometrical problems has led
to the making of, for example, a nonrigid polyhedral section for engineering
structures; a column of wood that takes advantage of the flexibility of
the material; a column consisting of a length of a chain held under tension
by a series of wooden bows; wooden sculptures having bristle-like ‘feet’
that ‘walk’ when they are given a push; typological forms
that he calls hyperforms made in plastic; and rotors with self-regulating
openings driven by wind. Illustrations of these objects are provided.

MANIFESTE GROUPE ESPACE
Varied authors including Ilhan Koman, Art d’Aujourd’hui
Revue, No: 8, Paris (France), October 1951
Abstract
This manifesto, signed by dozens of artists Europe-wide and approved by
the French Minister of Culture, was a commitment towards 'an Art caring
for the collective and private living conditions, an Art essential to
the man even the less attracted by the aesthetic values. A constructive
Art, which, by effective realisations participates in a direct action
with the human community'.

SPIRAL
DEVELOPABLE SCULPTURES OF ILHAN
KOMAN
Tevfik Akgun, Ergun Akleman, Irfan Kaya and
Ahmet Koman, International Conference of Bridges: Mathematical Connections
in Art, Music, and Science / Donostia Conference Proceedings, San Sebastian
(Spain), 2007
Abstract
In this paper, we present spiral developable sculptural forms
invented by Ilhan Koman approximately 25 years ago. We identified the
mathematical procedure behind Koman’s spiral developable forms and
show that using this procedure a variety of spiral developable forms can
be constructed.

DEVELOPABLE SCULPTURAL FORMS OF ILHAN
KOMAN
Tevfik Akgun, Ergun Akleman and Ahmet Koman,
Bridges London, Mathematics, Music, Art, Architecture, Culture / Conference
Proceedings, Tarquin Publications, London (UK), 2006
Abstract
Ilhan Koman is one of the innovative sculptors of the 20th century.
He frequently used mathematical concepts in creating his sculptures and
discovered a wide variety of sculptural forms that can be of interest
for the art+math community. In this paper, we focus on developable sculptural
forms he invented approximately 25 years ago, during a period that covers
the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.

PAPER
SCULPTURES WITH VERTEX DEFLECTION
Tevfik Akgun, Ergun Akleman and Ahmet Koman,
Bridges London, Mathematics, Music, Art, Architecture, Culture / Conference
Proceedings, Tarquin Publications, London (UK), 2006
Abstract
This workshop will present mathematical concepts vertex deflection and
Gauss-Bonnet Theorem with hands on experiences using paper, plastic, stapler
and glue. We will show how to create sculptor Ilhan Koman’s mathematically
motivated developable surfaces. We will then how one can construct a variety
of shapes creating saddle, maxima and minima using nip and tuck.
